Scout Master Minute - Larry Chandler
Scout spirit involves living by the Oath and Law. The Oath and Law
doesn’t just apply to your time in Scouting, it should carry into
whatever you’re doing whether you’re involved in Scouts or not.
On my honor I will do my best To do my duty to God and my country and
to obey the Scout Law; To help other people at all times; To keep
myself physically strong, mentally awake, and morally straight.
What does this really mean? Here’s what I think.
Honor – Your word is your bond. Having the respect and reputation for
doing what is ethical, just, and right.
Do your best – Give it your all. Your best may be more or less than
others, but it is your best. Support those who give their best and
encourage them to reach greater heights. Don’t down someone
because they aren’t as good as you or someone else.
Duty - Having an obligation or responsibility; just plain doing what
needs to be done:
God - Scouting is based on a belief in God. Follow the ultimate guide
to life – His Word.
Country – Obey the law and upholding the beliefs that this country was
founded upon and don’t stand for anything less.
Help – Lending a hand:
People - Everyone; parents, friends, scouts, teachers, leaders, and
people you don't even know.
Self - Take care of yourself, physically (flesh), mentally (spiritual,
emotional, and psychological), and morally (ethical and honorable).
A Scout is…
Trustworthy – Dependable, reliable, truthful, honest and responsible
Loyal – Faithful, devoted, and dedicated
Helpful – Supportive, caring, and a willingness to lend a hand
Friendly – Being nice and having a good attitude
Courteous – Considerate of others and polite
Kind – Again being nice. Treat others the way you want to be treated.
Obedient – Being respectful and having a sense of duty
Cheerful – Smile and have a good attitude
Thrifty – Don’t waste and be careful with all things, money,
environment, etc.
Brave – Having the courage to do the right thing to the best of your
ability. Courage is the ability to suppress your fears when and where
necessary.
Clean – Clean in mind and body. No bad thoughts, you don’t have to
curse to offend someone, sometimes the way you talk to them is just as
bad or hurtful. When your cup is tipped, what’s inside comes out.
Reverent – Respect to God, reading His Word, prayer, learning, and
telling others
